Fun in February

February 6, 2025

1. Spread Kindness Like Confetti!

Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to show kindness to everyone around you!  Did you know that kindness is something many inspiring people from Black history have shown?

Fun Activity for Kids:

  • Kindness Cards: Make Valentine’s cards for your family, friends, or teachers. Write kind messages inspired by leaders like Martin Luther King Jr., who dreamed of a world where everyone was treated fairly and kindly.
  • Kindness Jar: Write something nice about someone on little notes and add them to a jar. Share the jar with them—it’s like a hug in a jar!
Parent Tip:

Encourage your kids to connect their acts of kindness to history. For example, share how people like Rosa Parks and John Lewis were brave and kind even when it was hard. Talk about how small actions, like sharing kindness, can make a big difference.

2. Celebrate Black History Month!

February is Black History Month, a time to learn about amazing Black leaders who made the world a better place.

Fun Activity for Kids:

  • Hero of the Week: Pick a Black history hero to learn about each week. Some great ones to start with are Harriet Tubman, Jackie Robinson, Ruby Bridges, and Mae Jemison.
  • Story Time: Read a book like “Mae Among the Stars” (about astronaut Mae Jemison) or “I Am Rosa Parks”.

Parent Tip:
Make learning fun by tying it to your child’s interests. If they love sports, explore the story of Jackie Robinson. If they love space, Mae Jemison is perfect! Use videos, books, or local events to bring the stories to life.

3. Winter Fun with a History Twist!

February is still chilly, so let’s mix some indoor fun with Black history learning.

Fun Activity for Kids:

  • Craft Time: Create a paper quilt inspired by the Underground Railroad quilt codes. Talk about how quilts were used to share secret messages.
  • Cooking with Culture: Make a special meal together! Research a dish from African or African-American culture, like cornbread or sweet potato pie.

Parent Tip:

Use hands-on activities to make history memorable. While making a quilt craft, share stories about Harriet Tubman. During cooking, talk about how food brings people together and preserves culture.

4. A Love for Reading

Books are a great way to learn and have fun at the same time. February is perfect for curling up with a good story.

Kid Book Picks:

  • “Little Leaders: Bold Women in Black History” by Vashti Harrison
  • “Henry’s Freedom Box” by Ellen Levine
  • “Hair Love” by Matthew A. Cherry

Parent Tip:

Create a cozy reading nook at home and spend time reading together. Ask open-ended questions like, “How do you think they felt?” to encourage discussion and critical thinking.
